It promotes the Catholic Ethos, encouraging the children to develop fully intellectually, physically, emotionally, spiritually and morally. The school community of parents, pupils and teachers also work closely together, to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The school strives to provide a quality education in a secure and caring environment, where children can reach their full potential. This is reflected in our recent educational and sporting achievements. The school has participated in a variety of initiatives, in which it has achieved national awards. These range from the Junior Entrepreneur, Active School, Blue Star, Digital Schools of Distinction and Peace Proms Programmes. The school also encourages student development in the sciences and this is evident from its work in the Discover Primary Science and Green Schools programmes.

Our new building allows us to enjoy spacious classrooms equipped with the latest ICT technologies and the computer room contains twelve computers with broadband connection. The purpose build hall is used for all school activities and some community activities. The large tarmacadam area has playground markings for various games and is suitable for all ages.

Clohanes National School

Clohanes National School is a two-teacher school in the parish of Doonbeg. The school was built in 1889 and extended in 1953; the adjacent playing pitch was purchased in 1990.

The school has two shared resource teachers and a part-time Special Needs Assistant and Secretary. There are 33 pupils enrolled in the school

Many events which involve the school community are organised during the school year – these include Carol Singing and lighting of the School’s Christmas Tree, Sports Days, Christmas and Easter Mass, School Book Fair and Grandparent’s Day.

Both classrooms are equipped with computers, an interactive whiteboard and a visualiser. The children are participating in an e-mail exchange with a primary school in Hirson, France.

This year the children took part in the WOW Reading Challenge, which aims to foster a love for reading.

Sporting activities, which the children participate in, include swimming, cross-country running, girls and boys football and basketball.

The highlight of this school year for pupils in the senior classroom was performing in the Hallelujah Concert in the RDS in Dublin in December.

Clohanes N.S. is a green school and as a result the pupils are involved in composting and recycling. We are currently working towards receiving our second green flag. The theme of energy awareness is being explored and developed by the pupils in the process of realising this aim.

Children from Clohanes N. S. join with children from Shragh N.S. and Doonbeg N.S. for First Holy Communion, which takes place in April/ May each year in Doonbeg Church. Pupils from all schools in Doonbeg parish join with children from Kilkee parish for Confirmation. This ceremony takes place in Doonbeg and Kilkee on alternative years.

Our school grounds offer the children great variety at playtime. Our sporting facilities include a full-sized basketball court and a playing pitch adjacent to the school. Features in the grounds include the willow area and the wooden footbridge, which crosses the stream flowing between the schools and playing pitch. The stone built cottage incorporates a sand play area and the children’s favourite is the “maze” in the wildflower meadow.
